Safe Harbour: Respect For All

Posted by Alisa | 11.06.12

The first Tuesday of every month is celebrated as Respect for All Day. Tomorrow, the first Tuesday of November, will mark the 4th annual Safe Harbour Champions Breakfast event, held at the Holiday Inn Broadway, in Vancouver. As the 1st Vice-President on the AMSSA Board, I’m pleased to emcee the event, which will be full of diversity leaders from communities throughout BC and across Canada.

This year, we are not only recognizing a Safe Harbour-certified location in BC that have gone over-and-above the call of duty, but also awarding an outstanding Safe Harbour Community Organizer for the first time.  Community Organizers are non-profit agencies that deliver the Safe Harbour program in their own neighbourhoods. Congratulations to the nominees of both awards!

Safe Harbour-certified locations are businesses and organizations that demonstrate their respect for all through three key commitments:

  1. Equitable treatment for all and taking concerns seriously;
  2. An immediate safe place for someone experiencing discrimination in or near the worksite; and
  3. Preparing all employees and worksites to implement these commitments.

Thank you to Vancity, the title sponsor of the 2012 Safe Harbour Champions Breakfast, for making the event possible, as well as the on-going funding support by EmbraceBC, a program with the Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology that supports community-based anti-racism and multiculturalism projects.

As part of your multicultural marketing strategies, commit to becoming a Safe Harbour-certified location today.
